Letter Q

LI: to extend our vocabulary with the letter Q

For Reading we were learning about words starting with the Letter Q. We started off by reading a text talking about the origin of the Letter Q, and where it came from. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) showcasing words we know starting with the Letter Q, and words we don’t know starting with Q.

It was really fun and interesting doing because we got to learn new vocabulary, and we were able to do this activity with our friends.

Y-Chart

LI: To comprehend and infer from photos.

For Reading one of the activities were about making a Y-Chart for Violet Walrond. We had to think about how Violet Walrond might've thought, felt, and wondered during this time. The specific photo had different small details we had to use to infer things from the photo.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my inference skills to figure out key information.

Olympic Provocation

LI: To learn what a provocation is

For Reading we were learning about what a Provocation is. A Provocation is a certain topic that triggers emotions and feelings and lets people express their personal opinions on the topic.

The topic for our Provocation was the nations that hosted the Olympics, should they spend so much money on the Olympic facilities. Japan spent 15.4 billion dollars on their facilities for the Olympics.

To continue our learning Reading we also read a book about the Olympics, on Violet Walrond. Reading the book we had to answer a set of questions with our Reading Group. Tese helped us with our comprehension and inferring skills.

Main Ideas

LI: to identify the main ideas in the text Our next activity was to continue our learning with Matariki and Maori Stories.

For this activity we talked about the general important ideas, the 4 very important ideas, and the 3 vital ideas of the story. The important ideas are composed of 4 specific things that might basically summarise the story. The 3 vital ideas are composed of key parts of the story.

Student Led Conferences (SLC)

LI: To share our learning with our families

Afterschool between 3:00 - 7:00 on Thursday Panmure Bridge School had their Student Led Conference. During our student led conference students took their parents/guardians around their classroom and explained their learning to their parents. Once the student took their kid around the classroom, they showed the parents their 2021 learning journey.

My learning joureny composed of a piece of my reading, writing, maths, inquiry, the class site, my blog, and the school site. My parents said they enjoyed looking around my classroom and learning about the kinds of things I do.

Venn Diagram

LI: to find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and the text of “The Beginning” To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a Venn Diagram. For our Venn Diagram we compared the differences and similarities between the Video and Written Version of the Maori Creation Story.

A Venn Diagram, is a diagram showcasing the differences and similarities between two different things.

Summarising

LI: to explain in fewer words what the text is about. For our Inquiry we were learning about Matariki, and the origin story. Our task was to watch a video on the Maori Creation story and we had to summarise the video. The video was an artist representing and creating the story through sand art.

Our 20 important words had to be the top important words from the video, words that represented the story. Then from the 20 we had to pick the 6 most important words Then using those 6 words we had to sum up the story in a few sentences.

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times. Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts.

I found the words that Marc said motivational, I think it is also influential to me and maybe others.

Puaki summary

 LI: To write HOT questions.

Blurb: This week our group did reciprocal reading. The text we read was Puaki. The text was informing us about the importance and the stories behind a Ta-Moko. In the text there were four origins of four people explaining how and why they got their ta-moko. In our reciprocal reading each person of the group was assigned a role, a clarifier, A questionnaire, A predictor, a summariser and the leader. When each page was read each person would do their role (e.g: predictor predicts next page). While doing this we were tasked at creating HOT (Higher Order Thinking) Questions part of the text.

Reading | The Witches

The Witches is a book about Witches who hate children and the Witches also want to do mean things to children. The main character Boy, has a grandma who knows a lot about Witches, and how to recognise one.

Boy's parents died in a car crash and had to live in Norway with his grandma. Witches have a sizziling hot hatred for children. Boy wants to find all the witches and then grind them up, so that there are none left in the world.

Witches are bald, have a pink ring around their nose, and yet they can still appear as ordinary people. Witches are always women, ghouls are men, but out of all the horrible things on the earth the witches are the most dangerous.

The Witches is a very interesting novel and its really intriguing to wait for the next chapters.

Comprehension strategies

Comprehension strategies include prior knowledge, visualising, predicting, questioning, summarising, inferring, making connections, and skimming and scanning. There are different comprehension strategies that can be used at different times.

When seeing the books cover, use visualising, predicting, and inferring. People could visualise images on the cover. People could predict what is going to occur in the book. People could also use inferring to figure out what the book might be about because of the title and author.

When starting the book use prior knowledge, visualising, predicting, inferring, making connections, and skimming and scanning. Use prior knowledge to try and unlock the definition of words, and use visualising to help create an image using the text. Predicting is used to try and guess what will come next.  Inferring is used to find unsaid information. Making connections is used to link things from the book to other things. Skimming and scanning can be used to find specific information in the text.

When reading the middle pages use prior knowledge, visualising, predicting, questioning, inferring, making connections and skimming and scanning. People can use the same skills as when first starting to read the book.

At the end of the book use questioning, summarising, and skimming and scanning. Ask questions with an answer that deepens the understanding about a book. Use summarising to briefly explain the book. Skimming and scanning can be used to quickly look back into the book to find specific information.

Knowing when and how to use the comprehension strategies is good because it can enhance reading skills.

Novel Study | Reading

The Witches is a novel about witches in disguise who want to do horrid things to children. If there is a kid by themselves they'll most likely be taken away by a witch.

Grandma gets pneumonia so her and Boy aren't able to go to the lake in Norway, but the doctor allows them to go to a nice hotel in England.

After they arrived at the hotel, Boy seeks out to find an area to do his pet qmice training. He accidently stumbles into a room where he gets caged in with Witches, including the Grand High Witch herself. Boy overhears the Witches evil plans...

The Witches have sniffed out the scent of dogs droppings. To Witches children smell like dog droppings. They sniff out Boy so they had no choice but to turn him into a mouse along with Bruno Jenkins. Luckily Bruno and Boy find a place to hide from the witches.

Witches is a book, that should be interesting for little kids and older kids. I've heard that the movie is scary and quite interesting.

The Witches | Reading

The Witches is a novel about witches in disguise who want to do horrid things to the children. If there is a kid by themselves its most likely they'll be taken away by a witch.

These witches aren't the kind that are green and have creepy hats, who ride on broom sticks. These witches are REAL. They have terrific faces that will spook people out of their skin. The only reason they aren't caught easily is because they disguise themselves as ordinary women with ordinary jobs. The lovely teacher who shares knowledge with the classroom, could be a WITCH!

Witches are ALWAYS plotting on a way to terrorize children. There are certain ways to figure out a witch and they're: a REAL witch will always be wearing gloves, a REAL witch is as bald as a boiled egg, you might catch them scratching there head because of wig - rash, witches have slightly larger noseholes than normal people and the rim of each nose hole is pink and curly.

Witches is a book, that should be interesting for little kids and older kids. The book is very interesting.

SSR Selfie

Today I completed SSR Selfie. The purpose of the SSR Selfie is to learn how to summarise or retell a text. The book I read was called The Gruffalo. The book was interesting. We read this book as a class and used this book to learn new skills.

LI: To summarise and retell a text.

Governing Topics

Governing topics are the policies that parties wish to provide to the country and people. The important topic to me is education and health.

The education topic is about how the government should spend money on schools.

The health topic is about keeping people healthy and spending money to prevent getting sick.

I would choose education because education is important to me because I am a student. I would also choose health because I want to be healthy.

LI: To choose important governing topics by summarising all topics.
