Heart rate | Science technology

This weeks tech topic was about finding out what activities can cause high blood pressure and low blood pressures. We conducted this experiment by using a watch that can track heart rates, and doing different activities. We then recorded our answers on a table. We finally had to record the steps we took to complete this activity. We also watched an informational video and noted down what we thought was important from the video.

I enjoyed these activities because we got to do physical activities.

Science: Topic 8 | Acids and Bases | Tech

LI: To learn about the pH scale.

For science tech this week we were learning about how to measure how acidic or how basic something is. We tipped different substances into a dish and tested how acidic or basic the substance was. To test this we used litmus paper which is colored red and blue. Depending on what color the litmus paper turned represented the acidity or basicity of the substance.

I enjoyed this activity because it was very easy to learn about how acidic and basic something was.

Osmosis & Transpiration / Science tech

LI: To understand more about osmosis and transpiration.

During this lesson we learned more about transpiration, stomata, phlaoem, xylem, and photosynthesis. Transpiration is the effect of sunlight evaporating water. Stomata are the tiny pores found on leaves that absorb water. Phaloem are the small cells that help the plant distribute food in different parts of the plant. Finally, the xylem helps move the water from the bottom of the plant (near the roots) upwards defying gravity and bringing the water to the top of the plant. Photosynthesis is when a plant converts sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar, glucose or oxygen. More about the topic can be found in the document below.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to understand more about the specific parts of photosynthesis.

Trying out Laboratory Equipment | Tech

LI: To try using laboratory equipment

During tech we practised using laboratory equipment. Our topic was based around the practise of laboratory equipment. The types of equipment we used were beakers, petri dishes, thermometers, mixers, weighing machines, and stopwatches.

We measured 100ml of cold and hot water into our beakers and recorded the temperture of each of them. We then measured exactly 10 grams of sugar into a petri dish, and to get an exact amount we used our weighing machine. The last step we took was timing how long it took for the sugar to dissolve in the cold and hot water.

The part of this lesson that I enjoyed the most was measuring the temperature of the water, I learned that hot water dissolves sugar alot faster than the cold water does.
