3d House

LI:To use the most efficient maths strategy.

For the first Maths lockdown challenge we figured out how many wall and roof pieces the world’s first 3D printed house has.

What we did- we read the questions then we did 195 + 85 =  280

We did the rest of the questions as you can see above in the DLO. We worked cooperatively in groups to solve these questions and create a DLO of our findings. I enjoyed this activity be

Letter Q

LI: to extend our vocabulary with the letter Q

For Reading we were learning about words starting with the Letter Q. We started off by reading a text talking about the origin of the Letter Q, and where it came from. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) showcasing words we know starting with the Letter Q, and words we don’t know starting with Q.

It was really fun and interesting doing because we got to learn new vocabulary, and we were able to do this activity with our friends.

Heart rate | Science technology

This weeks tech topic was about finding out what activities can cause high blood pressure and low blood pressures. We conducted this experiment by using a watch that can track heart rates, and doing different activities. We then recorded our answers on a table. We finally had to record the steps we took to complete this activity. We also watched an informational video and noted down what we thought was important from the video.

I enjoyed these activities because we got to do physical activities.

Hauora Olympics

LI: To show our understanding of Hauora in context.

Athletes at the top of their field train both physically and mentally because it is both the body and the mind that need to be healthy to have balance as an athlete. It is important to enjoy and celebrate the results of what hard work has led to since it might be a one time opportunity. Olympic athletes that have earned a medal should be proud of themselves, and olympians that have unfortunately lost should be grateful for the opportunity.

Mindfulness Reflection #1

LI: to learn about Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about calming your body and mind, focusing on the present and leaving any negativity behind. Being able to have a positive mindset. For this new programme we were learning about how to be mindful, and how to rest our mind. This programme helped us meditate and learn how to get into a positive mindset rather being in a negative place in our mind.

When meditating we focused on our posture and our breathing, which helped us relax and chill. Doing this helped us focused on the present and kept our minds in the present rather than losing concentration, to the cause of mind wandering.

Olympic Maths Challenge 2 | Gymnastics

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to solve the question.
The first question we had to find out for the second Olympic maths challenge were what the difference between the gold and silver medalist score was. The difference was 0.001 between the gold and the silver medalist.

The second thing we had to figure out was what the difference between the bronze and the silver medalist was and we figured that out using subtraction. The answer was 01.750.

I enjoyed this activity because it mixed the Olympics with maths.

Olympic Maths Challenge 1 | Micheal Phelps

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to figure out the question.
For the first Olympic maths question we had to figure out how many metres Micheal Phelps swam in all of the events he competed in. The answer to that was 1500 metres.

The second thing we found out was how many strokes Micheal Phelps took in all of his events combined. We were informed that Micheal Phelps swims two metres with every stroke so we divided 1500 by 2 and had our answer of 750. We think that Micheal Phelps took roughley 750 strokes.

I enjoyed this activity because it combined my enjoyement for maths with the Olympics.

Y-Chart

LI: To comprehend and infer from photos.

For Reading one of the activities were about making a Y-Chart for Violet Walrond. We had to think about how Violet Walrond might've thought, felt, and wondered during this time. The specific photo had different small details we had to use to infer things from the photo.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my inference skills to figure out key information.

Super fingers competition

LI: To learn and recap on our Times Table.

During maths we had a big maths competition based around a game called super fingers. We were put in brackets with a partener of our choice. After the first round the winner moved on to quarter finals, then moved on to the semi finals, and finally two people would move on to the finals to compete against each other.

Each pair would have 2 dice and once the dice were rolled the first person to answer would get a letter taken off. The word could be anything the pair wants but you can also choose, but for this competition we used the word super fingers.

Olympic Provocation

LI: To learn what a provocation is

For Reading we were learning about what a Provocation is. A Provocation is a certain topic that triggers emotions and feelings and lets people express their personal opinions on the topic.

The topic for our Provocation was the nations that hosted the Olympics, should they spend so much money on the Olympic facilities. Japan spent 15.4 billion dollars on their facilities for the Olympics.

To continue our learning Reading we also read a book about the Olympics, on Violet Walrond. Reading the book we had to answer a set of questions with our Reading Group. Tese helped us with our comprehension and inferring skills.

Science: Topic 8 | Acids and Bases | Tech

LI: To learn about the pH scale.

For science tech this week we were learning about how to measure how acidic or how basic something is. We tipped different substances into a dish and tested how acidic or basic the substance was. To test this we used litmus paper which is colored red and blue. Depending on what color the litmus paper turned represented the acidity or basicity of the substance.

I enjoyed this activity because it was very easy to learn about how acidic and basic something was.

Matariki Brochure

LI: To strengthen our connections to matariki. For Matariki we made a brochure for the celebration. In our brochure we created different parts with different topics explaining the harvest, traditions, and many more. In this activity we also showed the origin of Matariki and how it was named.

Osmosis & Transpiration / Science tech

LI: To understand more about osmosis and transpiration.

During this lesson we learned more about transpiration, stomata, phlaoem, xylem, and photosynthesis. Transpiration is the effect of sunlight evaporating water. Stomata are the tiny pores found on leaves that absorb water. Phaloem are the small cells that help the plant distribute food in different parts of the plant. Finally, the xylem helps move the water from the bottom of the plant (near the roots) upwards defying gravity and bringing the water to the top of the plant. Photosynthesis is when a plant converts sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar, glucose or oxygen. More about the topic can be found in the document below.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to understand more about the specific parts of photosynthesis.

Matariki Stars

LI: To strengthen our connection to Matariki.

Publish your DLO’s on your blog.Matariki is the Maori new year celebration. It takes places each year when the cluster of stars known as Matariki are seen in our skies. The new year is a time for new beginnings and is a time to embrace tradition. To strengthen our connections to Matariki we had a choice of research activities.

I enjoyed this task because I had the ability to venture into learning more about Matariki.

Intelligence

LI: To increase abstract noun poems.

Me and my partner Azatulah created a DLO to present abstract nouns, we were practicing to make poems! Abstract nouns are nouns you can feel but can’t physically feel. see, smell, taste, hear and feel. Our poem had to include the 5 senses wich compose of touch, sight, feel, smell, see. We also included feel. A metaphor is comparing two things without using the words 'like' or 'as'. I enjoyed this activity because I got to be creative with my words and work with my a friend.

Dissection A Hibiscus

LI: To learn the parts of the flower and what their functions are.

First we learned about the different parts of the flower and what their functions are. We then had to learn the proper way to dissect a flower. After we were informed about how to dissect a flower, we had to carry on with the procedure. We then had to take out a single pollen and put it on a slide. We then had to put the slide into the microscope to look at the pollen closely.

I enjoyed this activity as it was soothing and informative.

Main Ideas

LI: to identify the main ideas in the text Our next activity was to continue our learning with Matariki and Maori Stories.

For this activity we talked about the general important ideas, the 4 very important ideas, and the 3 vital ideas of the story. The important ideas are composed of 4 specific things that might basically summarise the story. The 3 vital ideas are composed of key parts of the story.

Student Led Conferences (SLC)

LI: To share our learning with our families

Afterschool between 3:00 - 7:00 on Thursday Panmure Bridge School had their Student Led Conference. During our student led conference students took their parents/guardians around their classroom and explained their learning to their parents. Once the student took their kid around the classroom, they showed the parents their 2021 learning journey.

My learning joureny composed of a piece of my reading, writing, maths, inquiry, the class site, my blog, and the school site. My parents said they enjoyed looking around my classroom and learning about the kinds of things I do.

Venn Diagram

LI: to find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and the text of “The Beginning” To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a Venn Diagram. For our Venn Diagram we compared the differences and similarities between the Video and Written Version of the Maori Creation Story.

A Venn Diagram, is a diagram showcasing the differences and similarities between two different things.

Buoyancy

LI: To test the buoyancy of different objects.

This week in Science Tech we experimented with the different buoyancys that different objects have. The objects that we were experimenting with were Tennis balls, Large and Small marbles, a table tennis ball, and a golf ball. We also experimented with some different shaped blocks, that also composed of different materials.

When things float the term to use is 'That object is positivley buoyant' and when an object sinks then the term to use is 'That object is negativley buoyant'. Water rises when the weight of the object in the water is greater than the amount of weight that the water displaces. Mass is the same as how

I enjoyed this task because it was very intereging seeing if the object would float or sink.

Summarising

LI: to explain in fewer words what the text is about. For our Inquiry we were learning about Matariki, and the origin story. Our task was to watch a video on the Maori Creation story and we had to summarise the video. The video was an artist representing and creating the story through sand art.

Our 20 important words had to be the top important words from the video, words that represented the story. Then from the 20 we had to pick the 6 most important words Then using those 6 words we had to sum up the story in a few sentences.

PB4L | Expectations in the Classroom

LI: To understand the expectations set for us as the role models of the school.

Our topic for PB4L this week was focused around the expectations and rules set for us, and we should know how to understand and carry them out because we are the role models of the school. As a class, we talked about the expectations of a wet day monitor, the common rules inside of the classroom and what is expected from the teachers.

Some students showed us an example of how we can show respect in other classrooms as well as our own. They roleplayed an example of what they should do if a class was acting up during a wet-day and including other students during a casual conversation. More topics that we talked about was the necessary noise volume in different situations.

I found this lesson interesting but easy to understand because I am familiar with respecting the classroom rules and following expectations to a high standard.

Trying out Laboratory Equipment | Tech

LI: To try using laboratory equipment

During tech we practised using laboratory equipment. Our topic was based around the practise of laboratory equipment. The types of equipment we used were beakers, petri dishes, thermometers, mixers, weighing machines, and stopwatches.

We measured 100ml of cold and hot water into our beakers and recorded the temperture of each of them. We then measured exactly 10 grams of sugar into a petri dish, and to get an exact amount we used our weighing machine. The last step we took was timing how long it took for the sugar to dissolve in the cold and hot water.

The part of this lesson that I enjoyed the most was measuring the temperature of the water, I learned that hot water dissolves sugar alot faster than the cold water does.

Soccer Interschool - C.A.R.E

On wednesday some of the year 3s to 8s participated in the soccer inter school which was at Madills Farm. Panmure Bridge School entered 7 teams into the tournament. I was in the 1st LS2 team which was a team made of me, Oscar, Leon, Vayan, Chris, Lukah and Taua. I was the team captain.

Our first and most intense game was against Stonefields where we unfortunately lost 0 - 1. The second game we played was against Glenbrae which we tied. The third was against Sylvia, this is the game where everything turned around, we won 1 - 0. The fourth game we played was against Panmure District and we beat them 1 - 0. The final game was against LS2’s B team, another game we won, the score was 3 - 1.

This interschool competition was very fun for us as we had a great experience. A special thanks to Mr Ogilvie, Mr Pao and the other helpers.

Toys

LI: To strengthen connections to technology.

We have been learning about technological practice.  This week we have been learning about the 6 processes of Technological Design and how each one is important in the process of designing a product.
We are using the processes of technological practices to  design and build a rubber band- powered rover that can scramble across the floor. I found this interesting and fun because we were able to find the materials needed to make the rovers, and we were able to do it with our friends.

ASB Getwise

LI: To make wise choices with your money.

Today part of LS2 took part in a financial advice task, The activity was being held by an ASB worker whos name was Marlon. The activity was a game about travelling to Fiji for a week. We started off with $1800 and we had to make smart financial decisions throughout the trip. We had to consider paying for things like the passport, accomodation, insurance, activities, and food. We also had the option to use a credit card which is basically getting a loan from the bank.

This getwise session was very interesting because we had to really think about the financial decision we made along the way.

Settings

A setting is the place, time and environment of a story to help a reader make a connection to your narrative you need to use your words in away that helps them form a picture of what you are describing in their mind.

To do this we looked at an image and thought of 10 words that described and showed what we could see. Once we had thought of the adjectives or adverbs we used our smart searching skills to help us find synoymns that made our descriptions clearer.

I found this activity fun because I got to really think about how I would describe what the pictures would show us.

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times. Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts.

I found the words that Marc said motivational, I think it is also influential to me and maybe others.

Key Competencies

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them. I found this activity fun because it gave me a chance to think about my experience at camp.

Brochure

LI: To a collaborative brochure that tells others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp.

Over the last week everyone challenged themselves during the sessions at archery, high ropes, kayaking, raft building, camp cooking, pancake race and team building/orienteering. Our group collaborated to create a brochure that shows others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp.

I found this activity fun because I had the opportunity to explain to others about my experience.

Inside of brochure:

Outside of brochure:

Camp Collage

LI: To create a collage of your camp highlights.

This week LS2 have been celebrating our camp. I created this collage to show my time at camp and the activities I enjoyed. To make my collage effective I thought about the size of the images, the angle of the images and I tried hard not to leave any gaps between the photos.

5 Minutes of Camp

“Boom, thump, Boom” We traveled along the rocky and sandy path. As we walked closer and closer to the thundering sounds of the falls excitement grew in our hearts. When we arrived we admired the sheer beauty of it. It was quite the breath-taker. Mist blew around the falls like it was out of a fairytale.

We first were taught how to be cautious and how to start using it. When we were asked to get into our kayaks my head was so excited, but on the outside my body was shaking. I knew this was coming sooner or later so why was I nervous? I decided to take a leap of faith and just go for it, and I got in with flying colours.

We started to get a feel for our environment, I was so excited yet so nervous. I decided to just forget about the bad stuff and I just went for it. I was swooshing the water so that I could have a hard turn. It was quite fun experimenting with all the different techniques and speeds that the kayak could go.

As I went into the water I felt the water splash on my face while the wind blew throughout my hair. The splashing noises coming from the waterfall started to feel very calming.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LI: To recount a 5 minute snapshot of one experience you had at camp

Last week we went to camp at Kokako Lodge. My 5 minute snapshot shows my personal voice and I have tried hard to paint a picture with my words to describe what I was doing and how I felt.

I enjoyed this activity because it really let me think about what fun things I did at camp.

Tech Reflections

For this weeks tech reflection the year 7's in LS2 made Saagwala curry. To make our Saagwala curry the first step is to put oil and garlic into a large pan without the lid. You also have to dice the spinach, onions and garlic. Also get 1 tspn of garam masala and curry powder into a measuring cup. While getting the spices make sure that you get half a can of tomatoes. The rest of the process is basiclly just putting your ingredients into the pot, and stirring it while putting the flames on low. This activity was really fun, but I only got to cook one thing this term.

America's Cup Summary

LI: To summarise the America's Cup for people.

For this challenge we summarised main parts of the America's Cup. First we chose 20 words that we thought were important from an article. Next we selected 6 out of the 20 words. The 6 words we chose had to be the most important words. For the last part of this activity we had to put those 6 words into a summarisation. This activity was easy because I've done tasks similar to this in the past.

Puaki summary

 LI: To write HOT questions.

Blurb: This week our group did reciprocal reading. The text we read was Puaki. The text was informing us about the importance and the stories behind a Ta-Moko. In the text there were four origins of four people explaining how and why they got their ta-moko. In our reciprocal reading each person of the group was assigned a role, a clarifier, A questionnaire, A predictor, a summariser and the leader. When each page was read each person would do their role (e.g: predictor predicts next page). While doing this we were tasked at creating HOT (Higher Order Thinking) Questions part of the text.

Cybersmart | Cleaning out your drive

LI: To inform young device users about the importance of being cybersmart.

Todays challenge required us to create a DLO showing a tip that new device users should follow. My tip was about the importance of cleaning out your google drives. In our DLO we had to explain some information about cleaning our drives and we also had to create a screencastify to show how to clean our drives. I found this activity quite easy because I have expierence explaining to juniors about cybersmart skills.

Number Bank

LI: To gain a more in depth understanding about mathmatics.

In todays challenge we were asked to fill out a document that consisted of the biggest and lowest six digit number that we could make with six given numbers. To find the smallest six digit number I arranged the numbers from lowest to highest and then to find the largest number I arranged the numbers from biggest to smallest. I think that this strategy was efficient because it helped me with every one of the questions and I got the answer quite quickly.

Virtual Adventure

LI: To plan a virtual adventure around the world.

Our challenge for monday was to create a virtual adventure using google my maps. We dropped pins on the locations we visited. The second part of this challenge was to find the capital city of each place and include it in the information description. I found it challenging to find countries I want to go to because I don't have many places in mind. I enjoyed finding out about the different capitals of each of the countries I had selected.

Cybersmart Activity #1

LI: Be cybersmart and use our devices to learn.

This activity had us to fill in the blank sentences of the kawa of care. The kawa of care ensures that we taking care of our chromebook and making sure that we keep it safe. Some things that are important with chromebook safety are making sure that when you travel inside the house to hold it properly, and also making sure that when traveling outside of you're house that you should always use a case to protect your chromebook.

Cybersmart Activity #2

LI: Be cybersmart and use our devices to learn, create and share.

We dove into the understanding of the kawa of care. The kawa of care makes ensures that we are being safe with our chromebooks by making sure that we follow the rules of chromebook protection. Some rules being: Do not eat when sitting near a chromebook, make sure that when you're sitting at a table to have your chromebook away from the courner, and etc. The slideshow below gave me the challenge of Knowing where the keys are and where the shortcuts are.

Why is it good to be hydrated

This week LS2 learnt about why we need to be hydrated, and the outcome of being dehydrated. We then created a DLO about the attributes of hydration and the consequences of dehydration, and we also added the definitions of hydration and dehydration. Hydration is the process of feeding your body water, and dehydration is when your body isn’t supplied with enough water. We compared those two definitions in a T chart.

Leadership

LI: To define certain words relating to leadership.

We looked into the meaning of leadership and we defined the words that relate to leadership. We wrote down the meaning of 4 different words: Team, leadership, role model, and responsibility. They are all good qualities to have when being a leader. We had to list as many words that related to those four traits as possible. Using these words we created a 25 word summarisation about those four traits.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi Summary

LI: To learn in fewer words what the text is about

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a settlement between the Maori and British. This settlement happened when Captain Cook arrived and told the British Empire about New Zealand. When the Britain arrived to New Zealand they had planned to add New Zealand to their empire. The New Zealand chiefs weren't so eager but since they needed protection from the pakeha they agreed to a treaty that would guarantee protection and peace.
